Does Being An Intellectual Mean Saying No To Wealth?

Hi Reader!

“Money isn’t everything!”

When some people see or hear a comment like this, they have an argument ready. “But money buys you freedom, earns you respect, gives you this, gives you that,” and I'm like, hold on.

I said it isn't everything. I didn't say it's nothing or that it’s not important. I want things/experiences that money can get too. I just don't believe it should be the sole, principal motivation of an adult human.

A while ago, there were some comments or debates about "Olodo Uprising" which I infer refers to the ability of people getting wealthy or making money from doing non-intellectual stuff online. What's more interesting to me is how these benefactors of our (Nigerians) attention to absurdity, comedy, or profanity seem to mock intellectuals, academicians, civil servants, and bureaucrats.

The usual comparison goes - “How much do you have? You don't have money like so and so on social media.”

Weeelll, I know a lot of people don't exactly love their jobs and are just doing something to get, maybe temporarily. But career choices aren’t always solely motivated by money.

For instance, someone might be motivated by passing down knowledge to the next generation or solving a health care challenge in the country or drawing awareness to mental health challenges and stigmas.

Guess what? All these people want money too, but they'll probably choose roles, start businesses, or create content that'll allow them to satisfy their motives and pursue their interests.

If they are really excellent, they'll make good money but maybe not like an influencer, comedian, or streamer. In any case, since they're not thinking "make money by any means necessary", they'll be genuinely content as long as they can realize their goals. Or, they'll find other ways to expand their wealth while pursuing their dreams.

To maintain brevity, I’ll share more on this in the coming weeks.

Alright, that'll be all for now, until next Friday.

Light & Increase,

Osose Christabel.

Hi Reader! Better late than never so here goes this week's piece that should've arrive yesterday.🙈 I remember receiving several teachings on "Time Management" in church conferences over the years. It makes more sense now why it was such a recurring topic. Time (at least on earth) is a limited currency and nothing makes this more obvious than navigating adulthood. If there's one thing becoming an adult does, it shows you how precious your 'limited' time is because it never seems to be enough...

Hi Reader! Have you ever felt guilty about something you did or didn’t do? I know I have. It's normal to feel guilty when you violate your own standards or convictions. But when it lingers for weeks, days, and months, I liken it to the emotional equivalent of being stuck in a confined space without fresh air. You feel down, ashamed, embarrassed. You wonder what people might think of you if only they knew. And for those who found you out, you wonder if they secretly judge you. (Well, they...

Hi Reader! Today's piece is a repost from last year. “The greater the risk, the greater the reward”. That was my brother’s conclusion when we discussed Mr Mark building a platform that hadn’t existed before. I saw a video where he admitted to being shocked at the number of early sign-ups he received. But even with those numbers, it took about 3 years for them to become profitable. Sure, he probably had some financial resources and support to pull that off. But that’s not what I’m pulling out...
